Due to the nature of the Costa Rica programs and the hiking opportunities involved, students will need to bring a large pack to carry all of their belongings.

In addition, a light duffel bag will be used for storage and should be brought on the trip empty and packed inside the pack. See below for link.

A note regarding backpacks:

You will need either an  internal or external frame pack. All of your regular gear must fit inside this backpack and you should personally be able to carry it.
An internal frame pack should have a capacity of approx. 4500 - 5500 cubic inches, and with this kind of pack, your sleeping bag is stuffed inside rather than strapped on the outside.

The fit of a backpack is both individual and important. When selecting a backpack there is no substitute for the expert advice available at your local outdoor store.

A light compactable duffel bag will be used for additional storage during the program ....for example, when hiking Mt Chirrpo, any unnecessary items will be in locked storage in your duffle.

Our Costa Rica travelers require a personal insect net for use during parts of the program. The best type of net (pictured) is a personal self supporting type net that is compact when stored.
